LIVING SINGLE CONCEPT SERIES: THE BARKER-SHAW ESTATE
We leave off with Kyle deciding not to take the job opportunity in London to finally give it a go with Max and raise their baby together. So, lets just say they continued building their successful careers and raised their family right there in Brooklyn.
Welcome to
the Barker-Shaw Estate!
Inspiration for this concept came heavily from their apartments on the show. They both decorated with a certain level of sophistication with an afrocentric vibe. They also incorporated darker tones which I think also lends to the decor of the 90s. So I carried that same aesthetic over as I think they would still appreciate it with the midcentury modern furniture, animal prints and various nostalgic textures and colors but updated. This had to be a place they not only love living in but entertaining in.
For this concept, I mainly focused on the interior but I'd imagine, they ended up in a brownstone that they HOOKED UP but still honored the character of the home by keeping things like the original crown molding and hardwood floors.
Each room tells the story with art and decor elements from places they traveled together. I can see either one of them falling in love with an statue or painting they discovered along the way and then using it as the center piece for to design a room around.
Then of course they have to have an entertainment space for when the crew comes over for dinner or game nights because, yes, those absolutely still happen lol.
As you know, we left off with a pregnant Max and, in my mind, they also had a son! While they are well into their adulthood by now, they still have their rooms for when they come visit.
Lastly, Maxine Shaw is still the Attorney at Law so having an office space for her was important. I love it so much because it kind of reminds me of her apartment from the shoe - colors, decor, etc.
Overall, I wanted their home to feel very curated, very intentional, very Max and Kyle!
